As a car owner you might have to get your car repaired from time to time. Unfortunately, the process requires you to be very attentive to avoid car repair fraud and scams.
Here are some tips to help you out
1. Look for a good repair shop. Collect recommendations before going to the shops. Ask your friends and colleagues. Check on the Internet. Better Business Bureaus are also there to help you out. Check up with them if there are any complaints filed against the specific repair shop.
2. Try to identify all the problems you think your car has and tell those to the mechanic. You might even want to write down and provide a written copy.
3. Get another opinion. It would be helpful if you could get several opinions and estimates on the problem.
4. Demand an estimate before you authorize the repair. While working the mechanics can find other problems, which will cost you more. However, tell the repair shop to provide you with a written estimate. Sometimes, you will sign papers and the estimate will be added later. And it will be much more than you could expect.
5. Tell the repair shop contact you before fixing a problem they have just discovered. You have the right to know what is going on.
6. Make sure the repair shop takes your warranty into consideration
7. Ask for the replaced parts. You need those to see whether they were really replaced or not.
8. Trust your eyes. If the shop is not organized and dirty, probably, the quality of the services will not be very high.

Why you need all of this? Because fraudulent repairs cost you a lot:
Safety: Your life, the life of your family and other people may depend on that
Wasted money and time: You might spend a lot of time and money and do not get your car repaired.
