If you are going to buy a car, you should get a vehicle history report to avoid getting scammed. Odometer Fraud is one of the illegal tips that dealers or sellers make. If you become an odometer rollback victim, you may end up paying more than the car is really worth during the car buying process.

Odometer Fraud is an illegal act that represents the true mileage of the vehicle falsely. The sellers roll back car’s odometers for different reasons:

  • Keeping the vehicle under the factory warranty, dealers avoid paying for repairs.
  • The dealers don’t have to pay the lease return mileage fee.
  • For the recent year models, dealers download a roll back program from the internet, install it on a laptop,   and then perform the digital odometer rollback.

All dealers use this type of the fraud to make the car appear more appealing and fascinating for the buyers.  Also, rolling back a car’s odometer can raise the car sale value and increase repair costs.

Ways to avoid Odometer Rollback Fraud:

  • Asking for a search of titles from your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Request copies of the vehicle’s odometer disclosure forms from dealers who previously sold the vehicle.
  • Examining the door frame insides of oil change stickers.
  • Reviewing the inspection sticker from the vehicle’s last mileage inspection
  • Check the mechanical analog of the odometer’s numbers

The negative effects of Odometer Rollback:

  • You will pay more than you should have for the vehicle.
  • Maintenance will cost you more than you expected.
  • Older cars with high mileage require frequent servicing.

When buying a car everyone must check the odometer because a vehicle’s mileage affects its value. If you are a victim of odometer fraud, you should consult with an odometer fraud attorney and get a professional help.
